Understanding the SAT, ACT & PSAT
Why These Exams Still Matter in Today’s College Landscape
Standardized testing remains one of the most misunderstood aspects of the college admissions process. While many schools have adopted “test-optional” policies, the reality is that high scores still provide a significant competitive advantage, especially when it comes to scholarship qualification and placement in specialized programs.
The SAT
This is the most common entrance exam. It focuses on Reading, Writing, and Language, along with Math. The test is now fully digital (Digital SAT), adapting to the student's performance level. The SAT is ideal for students who are strong in logic and critical thinking.
The ACT
The ACT includes English, Math, Reading, and a Science Reasoning section. It is often described as more of a “content-based” curriculum exam. It moves at a faster pace than the SAT but features more straightforward questions.
The PSAT
Usually taken in the 10th or 11th grade, this acts as a practice for the SAT. However, high scores in the 11th grade can qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program, providing access to significant college funding.
Why Standardized Tests STILL Matter — Even in a “Test Optional” Era
- Scholarship Eligibility: Many institutional and private scholarships use SAT/ACT scores as a primary cutoff for eligibility. Without a score, you may be leaving thousands of dollars on the table.
- Strengthening the Profile: At top-tier universities, a high test score acts as a baseline “validation ” of high school grades, confirming that a student's GPA matches their academic ability.
- Course Placement: Many colleges use test scores to exempt students from remedial math or English classes, saving you time and tuition costs.

The Common Mistake Families Make
Waiting until the spring of senior year to test. By then, application deadlines are closing, and there is no room for improvement. The best time to finalize testing is usually by the end of junior year.

At the College Roadmap Program, we believe college planning should extend far beyond applications and brochures. Students deserve the opportunity to experience campuses, environments, cultures, and possibilities firsthand. Our trips are 3–5 day experiences designed to immerse students in the culture of college life.
Our Annual College Tour Program was created to help students broaden their perspective, increase confidence, and gain real-world exposure to the educational opportunities available to them across the country.
For many students, these tours become transformational experiences—not simply because they visit colleges, but because they begin to truly see what is possible for their future.

Our tours are intentionally designed to immerse students in 3 –5 day experiences that mirror real college life and campus culture. They are built to:
- Expand student horizons and life experiences
- Introduce students to diverse educational environments
- Increase motivation and long-term goal setting

- Help students visualize themselves in higher education environments
- Encourage leadership, independence, and confidence

Each year, the College Roadmap Program provides:
Plan Your Future with College Help For High School Students: Scholarships and Success
Annually, we give away🎓 Five Need-Based Scholarships (Including Flights, Accommodations, Excursions, and Meals)
Each scholarship covers flights, accommodations, all excursions, and meals during the trip for selected students.

📚 Student Supplemental Sponsorship Program
We also understand that some families may benefit from additional fundraising support. To help make our tours more accessible, students participating in the program may qualify for additional financial assistance through our Student Supplemental Sponsorship Program.

Participants can earn payments toward their college tour expenses through approved sales of educational and literary materials from the LTG Writers Team and College Book Series.
